Chapter Six

But what did she see in him? Sidney wanted to ask that question more than once on the way over to Berry Brothers B&B. The man had held out his arm for her like they strolled through the streets of New York in the early 1900s. Even Sidney didn’t act that old-fashioned and he’d been born in 1903. Granted, he’d spent many years dried up in a cell before they’d let him out in the 1980s on probation doing odd jobs for the Council. But still, something about Brian Dodd—he even had the stuffiest name—didn’t sit right. And the smell. Old and familiar. But he couldn’t see what he and Brian would ever have in common to be recognized as familiar.

“You’re being quieter than normal,” Ally said and parked in the gravel drive of the B&B. She glanced around. “Maybe I should park a few blocks away and we can walk back here.”

“I’ll need a room tonight anyway after we solve this thing. The reason for being here will be valid enough.” He pushed his door open and exited.

She joined him at the front steps and twisted the car keys between her hands. The house turned B&B resembled her sister Amira’s in that it had three stories and a bright white wraparound porch. A post held a sign that read Berry Brothers Bed & Breakfast. A smaller sign hanging from metal hooks showed they had a vacancy.

“I just assumed I’d put you up at my place while I stayed at Amira’s,” she said on a shrug.

He let out a sigh and gauged her sincerity. “That’s nice of you.”

Extremely nice. Small-town southern girl nice. Nicer than he deserved. He put Ally’s suitor out of his mind. It’d been so long since he’d had an onslaught of any emotions other than boredom. And it was a good reminder of why he’d never take up Sparsh’s offer to become an agent after his probation ended. No good came from getting personally involved with anyone.

But he wouldn’t take his uncertainty out on Ally. He shook off his mental sludge, gave her a smile, and moved forward. He held the door open for her. “Come on, teach. Let’s get some evidence.”

They approached a white-haired man behind a counter crafted from dark wood.

“Hi, Mr. Berry,” Ally called out to him.

Sidney shook his head. Of course she’d know the owners. Ally’s roots sank deep into Burberry.

She rested her elbows on the counter and leaned forward. “How are the grandkids?”

Mr. Berry gushed over her attention and took a photograph from behind him. “Look how tall the youngest is getting. I think she’ll be ready for the WNBA after college.”

Ally laughed. “That’s only about fourteen or fifteen years away from now. I’ll keep an eye out for her and make sure she’s in my class when she’s in third grade.”

“Everybody fights for your class. You’re the sweetest elementary teacher there is.”

Sidney cleared his throat.

Ally gave him the side-eye and turned her attention back to Mr. Berry. “I heard you have the famous YouTubers staying here.
